Autumn has arrived in its full glory and is now preparing to exit our southeastern region of CT. Old man winter has been teasing us with a cold day here and there and Jack Frost came late this year. But all in all it was a glorious fall and with its late growing season this year flowers were an added bonus. The leaves have mostly fallen with a few stubborn trees here and there. Piles of them gather around the perennials which still need to be cut back, the perfect home for small critters to nest. I have begun the task of putting the gardens to bed and removing the bedding which entice the mice to nest in, making them a nice cozy home with nice perennial roots to eat. I have a passion to garden, thus there is lots outside to keep me busy far in to this Autumn season!
I can almost smell the scent of hundreds of cookies piled high on the turkey platter about this time of year. Cookie baking was a very serious event when I was growing up. My mother maned the mixer with her cookie book and package after package of oleo! Her cookie book has a spot on my kitchen counter along with her rolling pin. The dog eared and stained pages of this book shows the time and seriousness of her art. Cookie baking began early, before the holidays, and the cookies were stacked one atop of another, waiting to be assembled on paper plated to be delivered to the neighbors. Mind you by the time they went out they had a flavor that can not be duplicated by any extract. After sitting together on that plater it developed and this is scent that if Yankee Candle reproduced I would by and endless supply!
MY daughters and I have taken over this art and each year we bake together, but all in one day...not weeks! We assemble them, to be delivered to family, friends, teachers and the mail man atChristmas. We laugh, we remember, we complain, and we bake. But most of all we do this together! I so miss the oatmeal boxes of cookie mom sent, no one daring to tell her that all that arrived were crumbs!
Need a recharge? A mini-getaway is a great way to relieve some stress! Chronic stress can raise your risk of a variety of health problems making a strong argument for getting away!
SEE you soon!
Our early warning system is also a great bug eater! Guinea fowl are know for raising a ruckus when something unfamiliar comes around. From guest to hawks they get all in a tizzy and make quite a racket. Thus calling the alarm to the hens to run for shelter! Quite hand to have around! Unlike the chickens they don"t generally tear apart the gardens scratching for bugs, but simply just walk around pecking here and there! So if ticks and the like are a problem in your yard I recommend this funny looking fowl, and as a added bonus they will squawk the alarm when you have visitors!
Amazing it comes each and every year but the first snow is just so magical!
We got a dusting to covert the ground and add some icing on the leaves, Mother Nature is just so Beautiful!
This makes me think of the holidays to come and the magic of the season!
